Many a homeowner has asked themselves this question. While it is true a fresh coat of paint with popular new colors can give your place a whole new feel, diving headlong into this undertaking unprepared and uninformed can quickly turn this into a whole new nightmare.
I can’t even begin to count the number of times I have been out at a home improvement store and seen your average weekend warriors out buying their paint and misc sundries for their painting project. No doubt they have spent countless hours looking over and discussing various colors and ideas. Many times in the instance of a husband and wife probably arguing over colors and ideas as well. Now with colors picked they head to the store with wide grins upon their face to make their purchases.
Usually, although not always they will purchase the better grade of paint and then head immediately over and grab the cheapest pack of roller sleeves, the $1.29 brush, the $.99 roll of tape. Now I start grinning. They head home, throw some old sheets down on the floor, stick a few fat patches on the wall, make a halfhearted attempt at taping off the trim and away they go.
The results, predictable, painted over unsanded patches, paint that got spilled and is now on the carpet because it leaked through the sheets, paint all over the trim because it leaked under that cheap tape and all kinds of fuzz on the wall from the cheap roller covers that shed everywhere. All this and it only took both Saturday and Sunday to get it done.
Your two most expensive purchases in your lifetime for most people would be their home and their car. Lets say you pay $35,000.00 for your car and $350,000.00 for your house. You own your car for three years and decide you are tired of the color or it has a couple of little scratches in it. Do you run down to the local home improvement store grab a couple cans of paint that look like a good match, run home pull the car in the garage and paint away? Of course not! Are you crazy, no one just paints their own car, yet you have no problem with doing exactly that with your home that cost 10 times the amount your car did. Seems a little crazy when you think about it that way don’t you think.
Now I don’t mean to say every homeowner who wants to paint their home is going to do a hack job, but may people get into it not realizing all that is involved. A paint job that is done badly is very hard to correct later on down the road. My advice is to contact a professional painting company and get a few estimates on what it would cost to have it done professionally, chances are it might be more affordable than you think. You have to factor in your time as well do you really want to spend a month of Sundays painting the interior of your home.
If you still decide you want to tackle the project on your own do some research ahead of time and do the project right, after that is a big investment you are taking care of. If you live in Illinois, specifically in the Naperville or Plainfield areas you can contact us and I would be glad to come out and give you an estimate on your project.
